Dan Sullivan blames Democrats for Trump calling for execution of elected officials
Sen. Dan Sullivan is constitutionally incapable of even hinting that Donald Trump is wrong about anything.
Sullivan, like many other Republican politicians, is terrified of Trump and won’t cross him, lest Trump try to destroy Sullivan’s political career. Trump owns the Republican Party and demands slavish obedience from his cult.
Sullivan and his spokeswoman, former journalist Amanda Coyne, are always claiming that after exhaustive research into this or that, they find that whatever Trump does or says, the Democrats are to blame.
Witness the latest example of Sullivan’s cowering—his mealy-mouthed rejoinder to Trump’s claim that Democratic lawmakers should be put to death because of a political statement in which they reminded military members of their constitutional duty to not follow illegal orders.
Making a video that says military members are required to disobey unconstitutional orders is not inciting rebellion against the government and is not illegal.
"I think it's important to say that there is nothing more American than standing up for the Constitution, that's what we were doing. President didn't like it, so now he calls for us to be hanged," Kelly told CNN.
The proper response to all this is to recognize that Trump is dead wrong, which is obvious to one of Alaska’s U.S. senators and anyone who is not part of the Trump cult.
“Senator Kelly valiantly served our country as an aviator in the U.S. Navy before later completing four space shuttle missions as a NASA astronaut,” Sen. Lisa Murkowski said. “To accuse him and other lawmakers of treason and sedition for rightfully pointing out that service members can refuse illegal orders is reckless and flat-out wrong. The Department of Defense and FBI surely have more important priorities than this frivolous investigation.”
According to Sullivan, however, Kelly and his fellow Democrats are to blame for Trump saying the Democrats were guilty of “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!”
Sullivan finds Democrats at fault because Trump repeated a quote calling for their execution—“HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!”
And according to Sullivan, had the Democrats not triggered Trump in quoting the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Trump would not have said that the elected officials “should be arrested and put on trial.”
After Sullivan’s office concocted a prepared statement in which Sullivan avoided anything of substance, while saying the Democrats were irresponsible, Coyne asked that the Alaska Beacon publish their prepared statement in full.
While I was glad to see the Beacon acknowledge that Sullivan’s office made this request, the Alaska Beacon was wrong to comply with the demand. This was an outrageous demand on Coyne’s part.
It is up to a reporter and editor to decide what to print, not Sullivan and his employees. Much of their packaged statement is Sullivan campaign puffery about how the Democrats are responsible for Trump’s death threats.
Buried at the end is a comment that it is not a “good use of the Pentagon’s time to investigate Senator Kelly” because his speech is likely protected by the First Amendment.
Not a good use of the Pentagon’s time.
Sullivan, who doesn’t want Trump calling him a traitor, couldn’t find the political courage to say that the elected representatives did nothing wrong, should not be put on trial and should not be executed.
