After spending millions, state abandons ‘excellence’ effort to consolidate office functions

Kelly Tshibaka tried to be the Great Consolidator of state services during her two-year tenure as administration commissioner under Gov. Mike Dunleavy.

The state has now abandoned much of what she did under the so-called “Alaska Administrative Productivity and Excellence” campaign, a venture that included expensive consulting contracts and never worked as advertised.

Sullivan's judge nominee can't imagine why being member of Federalist Society might help his campaign to become a judge

Aaron C. Peterson, 44, who may become Alaska’s next federal judge, signed up with the right-wing Federalist Society this year, a late addition to his resume that suggests he realized it was time to join the right club.

Peterson said he can’t imagine why joining the society, which counts a majority of the Supreme Court as members, would be of any help to him, however.

Dunleavy's last budget presents a final chance to do the right thing

Gov. Mike Dunleavy has one more chance to propose a responsible state budget, which would end his seven-year streak of December recklessness.

He can continue as he has in the past, proposing a budget with a giant deficit of $1 billion, $2 billion or more, pretending that he is giving legislators and the public a realistic starting point instead of a political scam.

Or he can propose a balanced budget that takes the needs of the state into account and includes a Permanent Fund Dividend the state can afford. Paying for a dividend anywhere close to what Dunleavy claims he really wants would require new taxes, tax increases and lots of politically unpopular choices.
